Cabled Fingerless Mitts
The story
I set out to make a hat and mittens set for a secret Santa gift, and as I was about finished making the hat, I got a message from the organizer letting me know that my giftee “not so subtly” hinted that they would like fingerless mitts. Well, the patterns I used were full mittens, so I had to scramble. I whipped these up and figured I’d share the love! You can download the free pdf at the links below!
What you need:
160 yards (85g) of worsted weight yarn.
5.5mm (I) hook for a medium or 6.00mm (J) hook for a large.
Tapestry needle
Scissors
Stitches to know:
sl st - slip stitch
sc - single crochet
blo - back loop only
hdc - half double crochet
dc - double crochet
fpdc - front post double crochet
bpdc - back post double crochet
fptrc - front post treble crochet
Tips:
When working the cuff, I find it helpful to place a stitch marker every 10 rows. This allows me an easier time when I do the first row of the mitt itself. It helps keep your base row even if you do ten sc between the stitch markers. It’s also great so you don’t lose your place counting!
Be careful to see where the pattern tells you to turn. This pattern is worked in turned rounds, but you don’t turn on some of the rows.
There is no gauge, but it is recommended that if you want a more snug mitt (or if you crochet loosely), you can use a 5.5mm hook.
After you sl st your cuff closed, the tail from the starting chains should be on the top of the cuff and where you will be doing the first row. You can simply work over that tail to weave it in if you choose.
Row 11 is in two parts. For the first mitt you will do 11a, and for the second, you will do 11b.
Make two
Cuff:
Ch 10
Row 1: sk the first ch space from the hook and sc in each stitch to the end. Turn
Row 2-32: ch 1, sc in the back loop in each stitch. Turn
Once you get to the end of row 32, sl st the last row to the first row. Turn your work inside out so that the seam is on the inside. You will work the rest of the mitt in the round along the edge of the cuff.
