Tips and Tricks:
You do not have to use the invisible join if you aren’t comfortable with it, but I highly suggest trying it! It will help eliminate some seams. You can find a tutorial here. If you choose to not use this method, a simple slip stitch will work.
The foundation half double crochet row is an excellent way to start projects and is a technique I highly suggest giving a shot! I wrote instructions for what to do if you aren’t comfortable doing it, but you can check out a tutorial here. I suggest following this tutorial when it comes time to join it in the round.
Gauge isn’t too terribly important unless you are trying to make this a one-skein project. The gauge is unblocked, as the finished item doesn’t need to be blocked unless you choose to do so. I did not block mine
The yarn is given in a range to account for differences in yarns. The samples were crocheted in three different yarns (Sirdir Jewelspun, Brava Worsted, and the listed yarn) and gave a range of yardage.
You can make this larger or smaller by increasing or decreasing your starting row by multiples of two. If you wish to make it taller, keep repeating row 5 until it’s as tall as you’d like. Doing this will alter the amount of yarn you need.
On rows 4 and 5, the ch 2 at the start does count as a dc. On the other rows, the ch 1 does not count as a stitch. It is indicated in the pattern when it does count as a stitch.
